Grammy: Classical Album of the Year

Grammy: Best Orchestral Performance

Grammy: Best Classical Engineering

This is the seminal recording for symphonic surround sound.

Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra: Four-channel quadraphonic sound was exploited at Columbia

Records in the 1970s. The Bartok Concerto for Orchestra is a terrific showpiece—and a challenge to perform. I decided to record it to take advantage of its brilliance and our new quadraphonic process by re-seating the New York Philharmonic in a large, 360-degree circle around conductor Pierre Boulez. The results were thrilling, as acknowledged when it won three Grammys: Best Orchestral Performance, Best Classical Engineering, and Classical Album of the Year.
